ASHLAND, Ky. — The grand opening of the new Gillum’s Service & Repair showroom will be a moment Michael Gillum and his family will remember for a lifetime.

Less than a year after breaking ground on the property, the Gillum family celebrated the store expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday. They broke ground on Feb. 27, 2019, on the property where the company warehouse formerly sat.

“It was a whirlwind,” said Gillum. “We are very excited and we are glad this day is here.”

Gillum’s Service & Repair has served the community for the last 25 years and will celebrate its 26-year anniversary in business in March. It employs nine full-timers and it has up to 17 seasonal part-time employees.

“This shows there is growth and hope in the economy in Boyd and Greenup County,” said Susan Callihan, Membership Development Manager for Ashland Alliance.

What started as a small business 25 years ago has turned into a showroom that sells a multitude of items.

Gillum said everyone pitched in during the busy times to make sure everything came together.

“I’m a small business owner and I know the challenges financially to take on something like this. I’m appreciative of them, the Gillum family, to make this happen for our community,” said city commissioner Matt Perkins. “It’s been a long time coming. I know they are excited. We’re excited for them.”

Gillum said the store wouldn’t be where it is today without the help and support of his father-in-law and mother-in-law.

“We are thrilled they have joined the chamber of commerce because the Ashland Alliance can only get better when we all speak with one voice,” said Callihan.

Gillum’s Service & Repair will have an open house on March 28.
