President’s Report – March 17, 2017

A Warm Week

I have been teasing mother nature over the last few weeks.  Our winter has seemed light compared to those of my youth and March was just a short month away from Spring.  I do have to say, this week was the coldest week of March that I can remember here in the tri-state.  The weather, however, has done nothing to offset the warmth the Alliance has felt this week.

Our week started off with the community showing its true colors.  I mentioned last week about the upcoming Youth Leadership Graduation.  I had the honor to speak before 44 of the brightest and most energetic juniors I have ever met.  Every single member of the class attended with their parents.  Kings Daughters Medical Center hosted and sponsored 174 people for the celebration Tuesday night.

The next day,  our community continues to show its commitment to investing in itself.  Our Community Leadership Advisory Committee met.  This group, made up of prior class members, met for lunch and a review session of how to improve this year’s class experience.  When applications come out this spring, please watch and encourage your employees to apply.  Our community needs more leaders.  It is an investment that will pay off for your business and the community as well.

That same day, Citizens Bank of Kentucky held the annual March Madness Business After Hours.  This is alway one of the favorite After Hours of the year.  It gives everyone a chance to show off their favorite college colors and it’s a great opportunity to network with our business friends and partners.  Jason Suman, Senior Vice President of Citizens Bank of Kentucky was a wonderful host.  He always has kind words that just makes the day better.  AND….Big Sandy Furniture provided a 55” TV as a door prize that Bob Hammond won!

We also celebrated the opening of Bellefonte Italian Restaurant Rilassante Room with a ribbon cutting this week. This room perfect for groups 100 or less and is a beautiful addition to options in the area.  It is always a great thing to see our existing business investing in their business.

Finally, this week was our Ashland Alliance Board Meeting held at the Old Post Office.  At our meeting, we hosted Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development office of Entrepreneur Services.  Our presentation was on the State Small Business Tax Credit.  This state tax credit rewards companies for hiring employees or investing in their business.  It is the only after the fact incentive program offered by the state of Kentucky.  If you have hired a new employee or invest in fixed assets of $5,000 or more in the last two years, you could apply for a State of Kentucky Tax Credit.  Like always, the Alliance is happy to help you with this opportunity and we have included a link to the application and information.

We also had an update from Boyd County Judge-Executive Steve Towler about his initiative of conducting a county-wide business survey.  The Alliance along with Morehead State are working with his office to help design and deliver a survey to listen to the business community and their issues.

This is my weekly opportunity to say thank you.  This week has been a productive week.  Our State Legislature helped pass HB 183 placing Ashland on the same footing for seating requirements for alcohol as all other legal sale cities.  The bill gives our downtown a better chance to develop and grow. This has been a good but cold week in the area.  Let’s stay warm and wish for spring.
