President’s Report – March 10, 2017

Marching on …

A famous author once wrote, “Only those with tenacity can march forward in March.”  While the purpose of my report each week is to inform you of the activity of the prior week and look ahead to the next one,  I thought a reminder that spring is coming, the sun will shine and we are moving in the right direction as a region was appropriate.

The Alliance was, once again, on the road this week.  Our week started with an invitation to present to senior management of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.  The Cabinet, from time to time, invites communities to share their story, activity, and directions in economic development.  This chance to have all of the site development managers and their supervisors at one table is worthwhile and can position our area for better engagement from those who see projects first.

Our presentation talked about who we are, what we have to offer and the competitive advantages that we have.  We discussed the abundance of qualified labor and the skill sets of that labor.  We spoke of the work the community has done in WorkReady, Certified Industrial Sites, Aerospace Certification, regional approach to economic development and our entrepreneurial partners including Tri-State Angel Investment Group.

Many of the people in the room we have worked with in the past but, this still gave us the chance to show the work, the opportunity, and the regional commitment to growth and development Northeast Kentucky has.  Good things will come from meetings like this.

This week, we also worked with entrepreneurs looking to start their own business in the area.  This is especially exciting for us.  We are able to link all the parts and pieces of the partnerships available, into a network to help make new businesses successful.  We have also reached out, spoken with and visited some of our existing members to ask how their business is going.  We seek to find individual ways that we can assist them in having a profitable year.

I think it is appropriate to say thanks along the way.  Next week is the graduation of the 23rd class of the Ashland Alliance’s Youth Leadership Class.  This group of 44 juniors, representing the seven school districts from Boyd and Greenup Counties, has completed seven sessions focused on introduction and encouragement in community leadership.  You have read about how the individual sessions build on their awareness and engagement in their community.  The speaker for the event has donated his time for the last 21 years.  Mentalist and motivational expert, Keith Matheny of Huntington, West Virginia will dazzle the group.  I met Keith nearly ten years ago during a presentation in Colorado and, of course, he remembered me.  King’s Daughters Medical Center is sponsoring the dinner and event.  I personally want to say “thank you” to King’s Daughters for this.

One last piece of information I want to share.  Next week at the Alliance Board Meeting we will have Kristine McNeil of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.  Ms. McNeil will be presenting on Small Business Tax Credits available from the State of Kentucky.  We will have a link and recap of the presentation up for your review in next weeks report.

Start with a quote…..end with a quote…..

March, when days are getting long,
let thy growing hours be strong
To set right some wintry Wrong.
Caroline May, 1887

Thank you for the opportunity to grow a stronger region and assist you and your business.
